CHARLOTTE -- As part of a new campaign, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are placing ads on Craigslist to recruit new teachers.

The ads appear on job boards in Charlotte, Raleigh, Atlanta, Miami, Orlando and New York City.

The district is looking for experienced teachers for 20 high-impact schools, and the ads boast salaries of up to $67,000.

But some veteran CMS teachers are skeptical Craigslist will reach the most qualified candidates.

“I think it's great that they're trying different avenues to recruit teachers, and I think something like Craigslist being a very small part of the whole is not necessarily a terrible idea. But I don't believe that they're going to attract veteran teachers with a passion and a desire to go into the high-needs and high-priority schools,” said Laura Richards, who has been a CMS teacher for 14 years.

CMS says in the first month of the campaign, 36 applications came from Craigslist ads. The website is one of about 20 CMS uses to recruit teachers.
