Another delay in the completion of the long-awaited I-485 outer belt, that will stretch about six miles connect I-77 and I-85. It's been more than two decades in the making, and construction on the last leg was supposed to wrap up in December.
"We have had some rain delays this Spring, some weather issues, and perhaps some over-optimistic estimates on when the project will be completed," says Jordan-Ashley Walker from the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
The date listed on the contract for the project to be finished, is July 20.
NCDOT says that is their final deadline, but they hope to finish sooner.
"This is obviously a hugely, important project for the Charlotte area, and it's important for us to get it done, and get it done efficiently, and on time," Walker said.
If the July deadline is not met the state can fine the contractor, Blythe Construction, $20,000 per day until it is done.
