NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. -- Crews spent much of Monday frantically searching the Hudson River for a missing Poughkeepsie kayaker after his kayak capsized near New Windsor Sunday evening.
Police said the rainy conditions made it difficult to look for 46-year-old Vincent Viafore.
"When the water is this rough, it’s very difficult to operate and keep your grid lines uniform," said Trooper Brendan Casey.
They said Viafore had been kayaking with his fiance, Angelika Graswald, 35, when the rough water and strong winds pushed him over.
Casey said Viafore wasn't wearing a flotation device.
"It was a pretty nice day, but as the day wore on, it got cooler and the winds picked up," said Casey.
He said Graswald tried to help Viafore, but capsized herself. She was wearing a flotation device and was later found by a boater passing by.
"The female subject was treated for hypothermia at St Luke's and released," said Casey.
State police said they found both kayaks Sunday night.
During the day Monday, aviation and local marine patrols combed through the Plum Point area to search for Viafore.
They said they plan to continue the search Tuesday pending the weather.
"You should remember this time of the year, the water is still very cold the weather can change quickly," said Casey.
