CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Fourth of July fireworks at Elizabeth’s Memorial Stadium is back.
It is the first fireworks show for the location in 5 years.
- The Memorial Stadium fireworks are back!
- The city is celebrating its sestercentennial.
- The festivities will begin 6:30 p.m. July 3.
It is a long-standing tradition in Charlotte, only this year, it's on July 3 -- a day early to kick off the holiday celebrations
Part of the reason for bringing back the celebration is because of the city's sestercentennial, also known as Charlotte's 250th birthday.
The Queen City was named after Queen Charlotte in 1768 to try and gain favor with King George III. The official anniversary is in December.
In most cases if you can see the skyline, you can see these fireworks
Festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. that day and the 20-minute fireworks show will begin at 9:30 p.m.
On-street parking around Memorial Stadium and Central Piedmont Community College will be restricted, but parking will be available on 5th and Torrence Streets, as well as Armory and Park Drives.
Street closures include Charlottetowne Avenue between 4th and 7th Streets, Elizabeth Avenue between Torrence and Kings Drives and 4th Street between Charlottetowne Avenue and the Kings Drive/3rd Street connector.
