RALEIGH – UNC Head Women's Basketball Coach Sylvia Hatchell continues her conversation with Spectrum News anchor Caroline Blair, where she discusses her recent history-making accomplishment, this year’s team, and some of the upcoming games that are aimed at recognizing those on and off the court.
In part 2, the legendary leader of the Lady Tar Heels spoke about what it means to her to be leading the team after 30 years. She recognized other legendary women’s basketball coaches who have lost their own health battle’s like Tennessee’s former coach Pat Summitt, and NC State’s former coach Kay Yow. Hatchell herself is a cancer survivor, and says after 5 years in remission she feels stronger than ever.
In addition to great play, women’s basketball often incorporates social issues with their games, and this year is no different. On January 27, the team will take on Notre Dame and also recognize National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The 1994 National Championship winning team will be recognized in it’s entirety on Super Hero Day on February 17 during UNC’s game against Virginia. And on February 24, the team will take on NC State on Senior Day during their pink, Play4Kay game. Another fun game is against Duke on February 7, when the team celebrates a Black Out game and The Office Night.
Led by the team's only senior, Paris Kea, the Tar Heels are relatively young, with a 9-7 overall record this year. Janelle Baily leads the team in scoring and rebounds, followed by Stephanie Watts, who is the 2nd in the ACC in 3-point shooting.
