CHARLOTTE—Velocity Sports Performance, a coaching and sports performance facility, is working to prevent injuries in high school athletes.
"We've had over 450 kids get division one scholarships in the last 10 years out of this program. Whether it's tennis, basketball, or lacrosse, we've had a lot of kids go play college,” said Jed Hartigan, Sports Performance Director/Owner.
The CDC reports more than 1 million high school students in the US are injured each year playing sports.
"Teaching kids proper movement techniques is going to make them faster, more agile, less likely to get hurt,” said Hartigan.
Doctors say one of the biggest mistakes student athletes make is playing the same sport year-round with no breaks.
"If you have someone who's only focusing on one sport, the repetitive use that happens at one location in the body can certainly lead to injury of that specific area,” said Dr. Kevin Burroughs, a physician at Carolinas Healthcare Sports Medicine & Injury Care.
High school senior, Joshua Allen, has been training three times a week during his off season for several years.
"Coming here, and working out all the time, the stronger and stronger you get, the less injuries will happen to you," Allen said.
Allen will play division one football at Miami University in the Fall.
"It was a lot of commitment but it was worth it - it helped me receive scholarship offers, so it all paid off," said Allen.
