A game that’s been around for decades is once again gaining popularity as a new fitness craze. Time Warner Cable News’ Jill Urban filed this report.
It’s fast-paced, high energy and a whole lot of fun. It is called Gaga and kids are certainly going gaga over it.
“Gaga is a high energy, fast paced sport played by a lot of kids and adults. It’s sometimes referred to a kinder, gentler version of dodge ball,” says The Gaga Center co-founder Alissa Schmelkin.
Played in an octagonal pit, this sport gives kids quite a workout. Using a soft foam ball, the idea is to push the ball around and hit other players from the knee down. If you get touched with the ball, you are out of the pit. Last man standing is the winner.
There is a lot of running, jumping, swinging, dodging - or whatever it takes to stay away from the ball.
“My strategy is to dance. If you dance, you can move away quickly,” says one kid.
Parents love the game too because they say this is a great way to keep kids physically active in a fun way.
"They definitely leave sweaty and exhausted. There isn’t any sit around time really. So they are constantly running, jumping, waiting for the ball, bouncing around, throwing, leaping,” one parent says.
Now the great thing about Gaga is that it does not matter how old you are, how big you are or what your athletic ability is. Gaga is all about kids just being kids.
"Kids love it because they don’t need to perfect any one type of hit or swing or shot. They can just come and be themselves and relax and run around and play and enjoy,” says Schmelkin.
There is also an element of luck involved, so anyone can be a winner.
Now each round of Gaga takes about five minutes. Sometimes when enough kids are out of the pit, a second round is started up.
Gaga has been around since the 1960s when it was played at sleepaway camp, but it is now becoming quite popular. The Gaga Center in New York is the first official center dedicated to the sport, but people have found ways to set up their own pits indoors or out.
If you want your kids to have fun and stay active, Gaga is proving to be a win-win.
