ST. LOUIS—The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is searching for two suspects involved in shooting a 19-year-old high school student at a school bus stop Monday morning.
"It’s a horrible act of violence that we wont stand for," said Mitch McCoy, Director of Public Affairs and Information for SLMPD. "Anybody that has a disregard for human life will be fully investigated and held accountable by this police department. And that’s what’s going to happen here."
According to police, the school bus driver called police around 7 a.m., leading officers to Pennsylvania Avenue and Potomac Street. When police arrived on the scene and found the victim, he was conscious and breathing. He'd been shot twice, with at least one gunshot wound to his torso. Investigators said the victim was not shot on a school bus.
Police say two men had a verbal exchange with the 19-year-old who was holding his phone. One of the two men stole the victim's phone and shots were fired during the altercation. The 19-year-old was struck by two bullets. He was taken to an area hospital and is expected to make a full recovery per police. Officers recovered the stolen phone at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
The victim's school (which per SLMPD's request is not being identified) released a statement:
