Travis Brown, the Ferguson police officer who was assaulted during protest in August 2024, is entering a specialized rehabilitation hospital today.
News of his continued recovery was announced on the Ferguson Police Department's Facebook page. Officials with the department said he will receive a police escort at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The escort will proceed from St. Louis University Hospital on Grand Avenue and go West on I-64/Highway 40 to Spirit Airport in Chesterfield. The department said the escort is open to the public but reminds everyone to be safe if they choose to join.
Back in August, Brown was attempting to make an arrest during protests but was attacked. His injuries left him in critical condition. Ferguson city officials released body cam video and surveillance footage from the protests outside the police station marking 10 years since Michael Brown’s death.
The videos showed the suspect, 28-year-old Elijah Gantt of East St. Louis, Ill., charge at Officer Brown on a sidewalk outside the police station after protesters attempted to pull down a perimeter fence. One of the other videos released appears to show at least Gantt on top of the officer on the sidewalk for a short period of time.
Two other officers also were hurt, one sustaining an ankle injury and another an abrasion.
Brown is the son of a retired St. Louis city police officer and the father of two young daughters. Soon after graduating from college, he joined the St. Louis County Police Department. He joined the Ferguson police force in January. Gantt is charged with assault of a special victim, resisting arrest and property damage. Four other people face charges related to the protests as well.
