ST. LOUIS—Two people are dead after fierce storms plowed through St. Louis over the weekend. The severe line of weather also knocked out power to nearly 80,000 Ameren Missouri customers at one point. As of Monday afternoon, that number is abotu 43,000 customers. Parts of Illinois were also hit hard. There are about 20,000 Ameren Illinois customers still without power Monday.
Two people also died from storm-related injuries. A woman died in the city of St. Louis when a tree fell on her car while she was inside on the 4100 block of Chouteau. St. Louis County Police say 5-year-old Robert Lawrence died in Jennings when a tree fell on a house on Hamilton Avenue, hitting the boy’s bedroom and trapping him beneath the tree.
Ameren Missouri says there are more than 1,000 crews in the area working to restore power. The company says additional crews are coming in from other states. Crews are finding significant damage to the infrastructure with many poles and wires on the ground, according to Ameren.
University City, Maryland Heights, north St. Louis City, Florissant, and Columbia, Ill. are among the areas with the most customers still without power. You can check outages here on Ameren’s Outage Map.
Clean up efforts are underway across the region. University City has announced residents can place downed tree limbs on the curb for pickup starting today. The city anticipates it will take three weeks to clear all the debris from the area. The advisory has been lifted for portions of Midtown and south St. Louis after testing shows the water is safe to consume.
