HAZELWOOD, Mo. – Heavy rains led to more than 130 people being rescued from the Reserve at Winding Creek apartment complex in Hazelwood this afternoon.
Spectrum News talked to Hazelwood Police who said some of the first people rescued were taken to the Hazelwood Civic Center only to be “rescued” again when floodwaters started rising around that building.
One resident told Spectrum News she lives in a second floor unit and the water was about 4 feet from the bottom of her balcony.
The fire department used rafts to safely move the residents. The victims are being driven to a Red Cross Shelter in Richmond Heights. Some of the residents arrived with a suitcase, others just what they could fit into a plastic bag.
"My whole everything is flooded," said one resident.
Dozens of vehicles in the area also are expected to have damage as well.
