A South Portland motel was damaged by a fire Tuesday afternoon, according to the South Portland Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at the Budget Inn at 634 Main St. shortly before 7 p.m., according to the department.
Firefighters arrived and found the fire was coming from the attic.
“We were very familiar with this building, having responded to a similar fire here several years ago,” South Portland Fire Chief Phil Selberg said in a news release. “Knowing how quickly an attic fire could spread, we called for additional resources early. That extra help made a big difference in bringing the fire under control.”
Nine rooms were occupied at the time of the fire and all occupants were accounted for, according to the department. They were relocated to an adjacent hotel building and the Red Cross is helping those affected.
Investigators found the fire was caused by an electrical failure in the ceiling of one of the rooms.
Firefighters from Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth, Portland Westbrook, and Gorham assisted or provided coverage for the South Portland Fire Department.
This story was updated with corrected information from the South Portland Fire Department to update the name of the motel at 2:48 p.m. March 27, 20205.
