A train derailed in Penobscot County Tuesday, causing a fuel tank to rupture and releasing thousands of gallons of diesel fuel.

Crews from Lincoln and Mattawamkeag fire departments were dispatched during the afternoon to the site of the derailment near the Mattawamkeag/Winn town line, according to a statement from the Lincoln Fire Department.

“Crews arrived on scene to discover a train engine that had collided with a parked train car that had rolled back off of a side rail and onto the main rail,”  Lincoln Fire Department stated on Facebook. “The crash caused one car containing paper products to overturn and a second car (also containing paper products) to derail. The train’s fuel tank was also ruptured in the crash, releasing an estimated 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel onto the ground.”

Crews used absorbent pads to contain the spill.

“Thankfully, the spill did not make its way into the Penobscot River,” the post reads.

No injuries were reported.
