Police have identified the body found on Monday slumped over the steering wheel of a school bus in Waterville at the junior high school.
Police were alerted to the body Monday at 4:30 a.m.
“Detectives concluded that this was an isolated incident and there was no threat to the public,” police stated in a news release.
Police on Wednesday identified the body as belonging to Anthony Engelhardt, 24, of Naples.
The Maine Office of Chief Medical Examiner determined that Englehardt died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.
“Engelhardt had no known connection to the Waterville School Department and had just recently driven to the city for reasons that remain unknown,” police stated.
The discovery of the body resulted in Waterville schools being canceled on Monday. Schools reopened on Tuesday.
