No one was badly hurt in a two-car crash in Lewiston Sunday afternoon that shut down part of Interstate 95 for an hour.
Weather may have played a part in the accident, according to Maine State Police.
“There was heavy rain at the time making visibility poor,” police said in a statement.
The accident happened at around 2:06 p.m. on the northbound side of the highway near mile marker 79. The crash involved two Subarus.
olice said a woman driving one of the vehicles “was traveling in the passing lane, lost control in the heavy rain and struck the other Subaru (vehicle 2) in the travel lane.”
The woman’s car then struck the median concrete barrier, came to rest partially in the travel lane, and eventually caught fire. The other vehicle, police said, had minor damage.
Police shut down the northbound side of the highway for about an hour while tending to the vehicles and their occupants. The second vehicle’s driver had minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital. No one else was hurt, police said.
Police said the crash remains under investigation.
