A Bath man is believed to have killed his wife and daughter Sunday before killing himself, officials said.

Police arrived at a residence at 10 Crawford Drive in response to a shooting, according to a news release from the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Police arrived to find two women suffering from gunshot wounds.

“Despite lifesaving efforts both women were pronounced deceased on scene,” the release stated.

The suspect was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the residence, according to the release.

The victims were identified as Lisa Bailey, 58, and her daughter, Jennifer Bailey, 32, both of Bath.

The suspected gunman was identified as Michael Bailey, 62, also of Bath. Michael Bailey was married to Lisa and was Jennifer’s father.

It was initially believed that Michael Bailey fled the area following the shooting.

Police ordered a lockdown of the city north of North Street until about 9:30 a.m., when they announced there was no threat to the public.

The shooting rattled the city of 8,800, known for its shipbuilding legacy.

"Bath is a very close-knit community,” Police Chief Andrew Booth said. “Things like this don't happen a lot and when it does, it's a shock. … A lot of people are having a hard time grasping what happened.”

Dylan Harris, who lives at the nearby Maritime Apartments, said the incident made him worry for his safety and for that of his two-year-old stepdaughter.

"It's scary when you hear about it and when you see it, it just makes it that much more real," Harris said.

The bodies have been sent to the chief medical examiner’s office in Augusta.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit and the Bath police continue to investigate and are trying to piece together a timeline of events.

Anyone with information should call Maine State Police at 207-624-7143, or Bath police at 207-443-8339.
