Ogunquit police have reopened Route 1 after a lockdown stemming from a report of shots fired in the area Monday morning.

Police Chief John Lizanecz said officers responded to The Hideaway Inn on Route 1 at about 3:50 a.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting gunshots at the building.

"With all the situation at hand, we actually put almost a shelter-in-place and shut down the roads in the area just as a precautionary measure," he said.

Route 1 was locked down from the center of town south to Bourne Lane, just before the Ogunquit Playhouse.

The inn, Lizanecz said, had been a bed-and-breakfast but is now houses migrant workers.

No one was hurt in the incident.

As of Monday afternoon, it still wasn't clear if there had even been gunshots at all. During their investigation, Lizanecz said police recovered evidence of fireworks outside. They found firearms inside the building too, but so far have not determined if they'd been fired recently. Lizanecz said Monday afternoon that no one was in custody related to the incident.

Police interviewed about 20 workers living at the inn, and shut down the town hall for the day to make space for the interviews. By noontime Monday, Route 1 had reopened.

"The community is safe," Lizanecz said. "I'm 100% sure of that."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the police dispatcher in the neighboring town of Wells at (207) 646-9354.
