HONOLULU — A series of clutch hits propelled the Hawaii baseball team to a series victory over Big West-leading UC San Diego on Saturday night.

UH’s 17-8 victory over UCSD came courtesy of 11 runs scored with two outs as the Rainbow Warriors (16-12, 6-5 Big West) struck early, jumping out to a 9-1 run through three innings. They punctuated the win with a five-run seventh to score a season high.

After the ‘Bows outlasted the Tritons (21-12, 10-4) in a 1-0 shutout on Friday night, the dam burst offensively. Four ‘Bows had multi-hit games with Jordan Donahue going 3-for-4. Matt Wong and Jacob Igawa drove in four runs.

Igawa homered in the fourth, his third of the season, and Wong had a bases-clearing double in the third. UH's previous season high in runs was 16 against Wright State on Feb. 19.

Randy Abshier (3-1) picked up the win in going five innings with six runs allowed (four earned).

UCSD dropped from a tie for first place into third behind Cal State Fullerton (11-3) and Cal State Northridge (8-3).

UH moved up a spot into sixth heading into Sunday’s 1 p.m. series finale.
