The Hawaii Department of Health's Food and Drug Branch issued an alert Wednesday for a recall of products by Wismettac Asian Foods, Inc. for its Shirakiku brand Curvee Puffs Corn Puff Snack - Curry Flavor, because the label does not inform consumers that the recalled product may contain milk, which is an allergen.
Retail stories throughout Hawaii sold the recalled product. The UPC (universal product code) for the product is 07441078512, located on the back right side of the product package. This issue affected all lot codes and date codes, according to DOH.
The Food and Drug Branch is working with local stores to make sure the recalled products are no longer for sale.
As of Wednesday, no one has reported adverse effects from the corn puff snack.
People with an allergy or high sensitivity to milk could risk a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume or are exposed to the product, per the DOH.
Symptoms include runny nose, skin reactions such as hives or swelling, itching or tingling in or around the mouth and throat, digestive issues such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting, as well as signs of asthma such as coughing, wheezing, chest lightness and shortness of breath.
Milk allergies can cause anaphylaxis, a reaction that narrows the airway and can block breathing. Symptoms include swelling or tightening of the throat, severe drop in blood pressure, increased heart rate, chest pain or tightness, rapid pulse, shock, severe difficulty breathing, trouble swallowing, pale blue skin color, and dizziness or fainting.
DOH advises anyone with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk who has consumed the recalled products to contact your healthcare provider. If you experience signs of anaphylaxis, administer an epinephrine autoinjector and call 911 as anaphylaxis is a medical emergency that requires immediate care.
Consumers can return purchased recalled products to the place of purchase for a full refund. Contact Wismettac Asian Foods, Inc. at recall@wismettacusa.com for additional information.
