HONOLULU — The Hawaii Department of Health reminds residents to be prepared for the possibility of heightened storm activity as Hurricane Season continues through Nov. 30 and that storms can happen any time of the year.
Hilo High School student Rianne Empaynado’s public service announcement was a winner in the 2024 Olelo Youth Xchange video competition. Her “Prepare N.O.W.” video shares tips on how to be prepared and resilient if faced with severe weather or a public health emergency. It urges residents and visitors to plan and prepare “N.O.W.” by protecting your physical health and mental wellbeing:
Prepare Necessities — Refresh emergency kits with water, food, medicine, hygiene items, flashlight, cash, important documents and other essential items to last at least two weeks.
Get Organized — Set up a personal/family emergency plan and listen for alerts from credible news sources and local government.
Practice Wellness and stay healthy - Eat healthy foods, keep active and get enough rest. A healthy body and mind will help you recover more quickly in a disaster.
