Mothers Against Drunk Driving Hawaii will be at the Hawaii State Capitol on Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. advocating for a legislative bill to lower the legal Blood Alcohol Concentration limit from .08 to .05.

They invite the public to “Day at the Capitol” that begins with sign waving on Beretania Street from 7 to 7:30 a.m., followed by a short press conference at 8 a.m. with Governor Josh Green, state legislators and other community leaders speaking on the BAC measure. There will also be materials educating the public about the .05 BAC bill.

The news release cites research that shows lowering the legal BAC limit to .05 reduces alcohol-related fatalities. States and countries that have adopted a .05 BAC limit have experienced declines in impaired driving deaths.

“We’re committed to advocating for a safer Hawaii by reducing the legal BAC limit to .05, a proven measure to decrease alcohol-related crashes and fatalities," said MADD Hawaii program manager Makena Young in the release. "This event is an opportunity to unite our community and demonstrate our collective support for this life-saving legislation."

MADD Hawaii invites the public to join them together with SafeRide, HIAPA, BoldLikeBritt, Goals Hawaii and other community partners to protect communities and save lives. “Your presence and support can make a difference in advocating for a safer Hawaii.”

Attendees are encouraged to wear red in solidarity with MADD’s mission.
