WAILUKU, Hawaii — The Maui Emergency Management Agency lifted a mandatory evacuation for residents in the Piihana Road area in Wailuku on Monday at 1:10 p.m. The evacuation order was issued earlier in the day because of a fast-moving brush fire, according to a news release.

On Monday at 12:32 p.m., MEMA also lifted a voluntary evacuation for Happy Valley and Wailuku Country Estates.

Fire officials report the brush fire is 90% contained after burning about 4 acres of land.

The Maui Fire Department reported four fires in the Piihana Farms area Monday at 9:15 a.m.

On Monday after the fires were first reported, police officers went door-to-door to inform Piihana Road residents of the mandatory evacuation order. The door-to-door evacuations were followed at 10:55 a.m. by Wireless Emergency Alerts for the voluntary evacuations of Happy Valley and Wailuku Country Estates. WEA broadcasts via phone, TV and radio, and is separate from MEMA alerts, which require subscriptions. Emergency personnel directed evacuees to Keōpūolani Regional Park.

Firefighters are still on the scene and working to contain the fire.

The Maui Police Department reopened Piihana Road on Monday at 1:10 p.m.

A little over a week ago, a brush fire near Crater Road in Haleakala burned through more than 500 acres of land. Two emergency advisories to prepare for possible evacuations were posted, but later lifted.
