HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, Hawaii — Hawaii Volcanoes National Park announced single lane entry into the park will begin Monday and last about two weeks. During that time, crews will do construction work on the administrative lane to improve safety and traffic flow.
Park officials warned visitors to expect delays at the entrance station, according to a news release.
The road construction is part of the Disaster Recovery Project, which includes realigning Crater Rim Drive to reduce congestion, adding an administrative lane, and installing a roundabout beyond the entrance station. On Monday, as part of the DRP, crews will also begin dismantling Jaggar Museum and two other buildings at Uekahuna, which were damaged in the 2018 Kilauea eruption. The DRP aims to restore Uekahuna to a more natural landscape, as the area is sacred to Native Hawaiians and other groups.
The first phase of construction will concentrate on the right entrance lane along Crater Rim Drive. Crews will work on curb removal, clearing and grubbing the shoulder for the new administrative lane, and grading the shoulder.
