A new off-leash dog park opened Thursday in the Salt Lake community, according to a news release from the Department of Parks and Recreation.

Hoa Aloha Neighborhood Park is Oahu’s ninth off-leash dog park. The park includes water fountains, benches and two separate fenced-in areas for large and small dogs. The small dog park encompasses 3,000 square feet, while the large one encompasses 7,000 square feet. The entire neighborhood park is four acres and includes a bathroom building and playground.

“Dogs are not just pets; they are healers, friends and protectors,” said Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation Director Laura H. Thielen. “The joy and appreciation for the outdoors they bring our lives is something we encourage in these public spaces. We aim to make our city parks more and more inviting to responsible dog owners and their canine companions.”

Thielen thanked Honolulu Councilmember Radiant Cordero for assisting with the park’s creation.

The park is open from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, except for Tuesdays, when the park will open at noon, to allow for weekly maintenance.
