Hawaii Countyʻs Derelict/Abandoned Vehicle Section within the Department of Environmental Management is addressing derelict and abandoned vehicles left on public roadways with an updated Vehicle Disposal Assistance Program, according to a news release.
The update will allow the Derelict/Abandoned Vehicle Section to tow vehicles from private property.
Through the program, residents will have the opportunity to legally and properly dispose of up to two junked vehicles each fiscal year for free pending funding availability.
Residents can apply for the program starting Monday, Aug. 7. Read the requirements carefully since failure to comply will result in automatic denial of the application. After meeting all requirements and upon approval, the agency will tow and dispose of the vehicle once contracts are in place, according to the agency.
Registered vehicle owners and property owners are encouraged to submit applications early since the program is based on fund availability.
The application and requirements are on the Department of Environmental Management/Abandoned Vehicles webpage. Contact the Derelict/Abandoned Vehicle Section at 808-961-8552 or email vdap@hawaiicounty.gov with any questions.
