A dead humpback whale calf was found in waters off Maui, prompting a response from federal, state, and county authorities.

DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement, the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources, NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service, Maui Ocean Safety, and the University of Hawaii and Stranding Lab are coordinating a response, according to a news release.

Responders are working together to tow the whale remains offshore in order to dispose of them, as requested by Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners.
