"Magnum P.I." will be hanging up his Hawaiian shirt – for good this time.
NBC has opted not to extend the Hawaii-based series beyond the 20-episode fifth season, Deadline reports. The remaining 10 episodes are due to air in 2024 and will close the books on the rebooted detective series.
The crime drama starring Jay Hernandez as Thomas Magnum and Perdita Weeks as Juliet Higgins had escaped network cancellation once already. While the show performed well in the ratings on Friday nights on CBS, the network pulled the plug after four seasons in May 2022 when it failed to agree on licensing fees with the studios. The show was jointly produced by CBS Studios and NBCUniversal.
NBC stepped in to save "Magnum" following a massive fan outcry, which included a billboard campaign in Times Square.
According to Deadline, the options on the cast were up for renewal on June 30, and with the ongoing writers' strike showing no end in sight, the Peacock Network opted not to continue the series.
Fans around the world who rallied to save the series were upset after learning of the cancellation.
"Oh man, I had a feeling this was going to happen, but it doesn’t make this news any easier," fan Max Gao tweeted. "#MagnumPI is the ideal show for broadcast TV right now — a procedural set in a beautiful location with a fan-favorite romance — and it still wasn’t enough. This sucks."
Actress Amy Hill ("Kumu"), tweeted, "Love the cast, crew, production staff, writers, casting. Everyone and everything to do with MPI! What a gift these last 5 seasons have been. Huge hugs to all our fans who went above and beyond."
The show was a boon to the local economy, employing more than 180 local island residents in the crews, including makeup artists, costume designers, stuntpersons and extras.
Another Hawaii-based procedural series, "NCIS: Hawai'i," was renewed for a third season in February.
