LIHUE, Hawaii — The County of Kauai’s Solid Waste Division is currently accepting grant applications aimed at recycling and waste diversion projects that abide by recommendations in the recent Solid Waste Management Plan Update. A total of $80,000 is available in the new competitive grant program.

Grants are only available to nonprofit organizations.

Permitting of food waste composting, diverting food waste from the landfill and innovating methods of plastic processing are a few examples of projects.

Points will be awarded based on the following criteria: project strength, planning and goals; project impact and potential to affect waste diversion; measurability of project’s success; experience of organization in implementing similar projects; and budget feasibility.

A committee will review the proposals and rank them according to their overall scores. Selected projects may receive full or partial funding.

Scoring information and downloadable applications are available at the Kauai County Recycling and Waste Diversion Grant Program website. The deadline to submit grant applications is 3 p.m. Feb. 10. Email them to Keola Aki at kaki@kauai.gov.
