Admission Day, or Statehood Day, is a holiday that commemorates Hawaii’s admission into the union as the 50th U.S. state.

It is observed every year on the third Friday of August. For 2022, the day is observed on Friday, Aug. 19, and state, county and other government agencies have announced services and operations that are closed or modified.


What You Need To Know

  • Honolulu, Maui and Kauai county offices will be closed on Aug. 19

  • Parking is prohibited on Makalii Place in Kailua and on all streets and shoulders of Mokulua and Aalapapa Drives in Lanikai  10 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 19 through Aug. 21

  • TheBus on Oahu will run on its holiday schedule, but The Kauai Bus will run on its regular schedule

  • Regular public swim schedule at the K. Mark Takai Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center will be suspended in observation for the holiday; it will remain closed through Aug. 28 for the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships

On Oahu, all City and County of Honolulu offices will be closed on Aug. 19. Emergency medical services, fires, lifeguard, medical examiner and police services will be available.

TheBus will run on its holiday schedule. Visit thebus.org for details. Trash will be collected and transfer stations, convenience centers, H-POWER and Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill will remain open. Visit honolulu.gov/opala for details. 

Parks and botanical gardens are open, as are the municipal golf courses and the Honolulu Zoo

The Neal S. Blaisdell Center box office will be closed and the People’s Open Market will not be held.

All satellite city halls and driver licensing centers will be closed, as will the COVID-19 Response Line (808-768-CITY).

Parking in Kailua and Lanikai will be restricted over the Admission Day Weekend. No parking will be allowed on Makalii Place in Kailua and on all streets and shoulders of Mokulua and Aalapapa Drives in Lanikai from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 19 through Aug. 21. Parking will also be restricted on cross-streets connecting Mokulua and Aalapapa Drives.

On-street parking will be free, except for the meters located on Kalakaua Avenue along Queen Kapiolani Park, metered parking lots and meters on select Waikiki streets. Check for the list of streets here

Traffic lanes will not be coned for contraflow and there will be no scheduled daytime roadwork. The HOV lanes and special use lanes will not operate.

The regular public swim schedule at the K. Mark Takai Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center will be suspended in observation for the holiday. However, it will remain closed through Aug. 28 in preparation for the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships.

On Maui, all county offices will be closed on Friday, in observance of the Statehood Day holiday.

All County of Kauai offices will also be closed on Aug. 19, as will all neighborhood centers. Other services and facilities that will be closed on the holiday include the COVID-19 testing at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center and Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall; the Puhi Metals Recycling Center, Reynolds Recycling HI5 Redemption Center in Lihue; the Kekaha Landfill and all refuse transfer stations.

The Waimea swimming pool will also be closed.

The Kauai Bus will be operating on its regular schedule and residential refuse collection will remain unchanged.

All County of Kauai offices and services will resume regular business hours on Monday, Aug. 22.
