As the country celebrates Independence Day on Monday, July 4, county and other government agencies have announced services and operations that are closed or modified throughout the weekend and on Monday.


What You Need To Know

  • Honolulu, Maui and Kauai county offices will be closed on July 4

  • Parking is prohibited on Makalii Place in Kailua and on all streets and shoulders of Mokulua and Aalapapa Drives in Lanikai  10 a.m.-3 p.m. July 2 through July 4

  • TheBus on Oahu will run on its Sunday schedule. The Kauai Bus will run on its regular schedule

  • The Kapaa and Waimea swimming pools on Kauai, which are normally closed on Mondays, will also be closed on Tuesday, July 5

On Oahu, City and County of Honolulu offices will be closed on July 4. Emergency, medical services, fire, lifeguard, medical examiner and police services will be available.

TheBus will run on its Sunday schedule. For details, go to thebus.org. Trash will be collected and transfer stations, convenience centers, H-POWER and Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill will remain open. Visit honolulu.gov/opala for details.

Parks and botanical gardens are open, as are the municipal golf courses and the Honolulu Zoo.

The Neal S. Blaisdell Center box office will be closed and the People’s Open Market will not be held.

All satellite city halls and driver’s licensing centers will be closed, as will the COVID-19 Response Line (808-768-CITY).

Parking in Kailua and Lanikai will be restricted over the three-day holiday. No parking will be allowed on Makalii Place in Kailua and on all streets and shoulders of Mokulua and Aalapapa Drives in Lanikai from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. July 2 through July 4. Parking will also be restricted on cross-streets connecting Mokulua and Aalapapa Drives.

On-street parking will be free, except for the meters located on Kalakaua Avenue along Queen Kapiolani Park, metered parking lots and meters on select Waikiki streets. Check for the list of streets here.

The Honolulu Mobile Lab that offers free COVID-19 testing for Oahu residents at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport will have a modified schedule on July 4. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For details or to register for a test, visit oahucitypass.lumisight.com

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources also sent out a reminder that alcohol is prohibited at Ahu o Laka (also known as the Kaneohe sandbar) during summer three-day weekends.

“This Fourth of July weekend, as we do on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, we will have officers on land and in the water to enforce the rules and to ensure people can enjoy themselves safely and respectfully,” said DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement Chief Jason Redulla in a press release.

All Maui County offices will be closed on July 4. Curbside rubbish collection will be conducted on its regular schedule and the Central Maui Landfill, EKO Compost Greenwaste and Oluwalu Recycling station will be open 6 a.m.-12 p.m. All other Maui County landfills will be closed.

Kauai County offices will also be closed on July 4, as will all neighborhood centers. Other services and facilities that will be closed on the holiday include the COVID-19 testing at the Hanalei Neighborhood Center and Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall; the Puhi Metals Recycling Center, Reynolds Recycling HI5 Redemption Center in Lihue; the Kekaha Landfill and all refuse transfer stations.

The Kapaa and Waimea swimming pools, which are normally closed on Mondays, will also be closed on Tuesday, July 5.

The Kauai Bus will be operating on its regular schedule and residential refuse pick-up will remain unchanged.
