Work continues to be done to prevent off-road vehicles from driving on local streets around the Rochester area.

An operation over the weekend across the county resulted in 57 traffic tickets between Rochester and Brighton police with the help of New York State Police. Authorities say 13 off-road vehicles were also seized.

The Rochester Police Department says that brings the total number of such vehicles taken off city streets this year up to 156.

During that detail, Rochester police say they also charged a rider with criminal possession of a weapon for allegedly possessing a 9mm handgun illegally. The gun had previously been reported stolen, according to investigators.

Off-road vehicles being driven on public roads has continued to be a nuisance and public safety issue in Monroe County with sometimes dozens of riders traveling in groups of unregistered dirt bikes and ATVs. In 2021, the Monroe County Legislature voted to enact a local law that increases fines to $500 for a first offense, and $2,000 for a second offense. The vehicle is also impounded and proof of registration and ownership is required to retrieve it.
