An emotional scene played out in front of a home in Hilton on Monday after police say a family discovered their 2-year-old twin boys unresponsive.

"It’s a very sad day for this family," said Capt. Dean Tuthill of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. "Our heart goes out to the family — we can only imagine what they’re going through."

Deputies, EMS and firefighters responded to the home on Parkwood Lane just after 5:30 a.m. They say one of the boys died at the scene. His twin brother was also found unresponsive, but deputies say he is alive and is currently in serious condition at the hospital.

Investigators say it's unclear at this time why the boys were unresponsive. Capt. Tuthill says there were no signs of foul play or any drugs found at the scene. Hilton firefighters also ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning.

"As you know, an investigation like this takes some time," said Capt. Dean Tuthill of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. "We do not have all the answers. This is a very tragic investigation. What's most important here is that we lost a young member of our community."

The sheriff's office says the family is cooperating with investigators. Right now, the incident is being investigated as a suspicious death until more information becomes available.

"We have to give pause for the family at this point," said Capt. Tuthill. "This is a great grieving process they have to go through and we’re going to let that happen."

Tuthill added that it has been a tough and emotional situation for all involved.

An update isn't expected until at least Tuesday as authorities give the family time to grieve and notify relatives.
