SCOTTSVILLE, N.Y. — The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has released the name of a teenager who drowned in Oatka Creek this week.

It happened around 9 p.m. Tuesday off of River Road in Scottsville.

The sheriff's office says it appears Tyreece Johnson, 18, of Rochester, entered the water and then swam to the middle of the creek before he began to struggle. Police say he went under and multiple bystanders jumped into the water in an attempt to save him but were unsuccessful.

Johnson's body was later recovered by firefighters and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members were notified of his death after arriving at the creek.

The incident is still under investigation.
