Author and advocate Chaz Bono was in Rochester on Thursday to speak at the Hope & Recovery luncheon.

Put on by East House, the event is a celebration for people in recovery from mental health and substance use disorders.

The only child of Sonny and Cher, Bono is now an author and advocate for those who are going through the same recovery as he did.

"Hitting some type of bottom or having some moment of clarity where you can finally see yourself and see where your life is is what was key for me," Bono said. "It wasn't some dramatic moment, either. It was just a moment where I was finally able to look at myself."

Bono is the author of three books, including "Transition: The Story of How I Became a Man."
