PENFIELD, N.Y. — Wegmans is holding their 12th pharmaceutical waste collection event in conjunction with Monroe County.
At the event, which takes place June 26 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Penfield Wegmans, there will be a truck parked outside where you can drop off old or unused prescriptions, over-the-counter and pet medicines.
Monroe County Environmental Services Director Mike Garland says to not throw old medicine in the trash because it could end up in our waterways.
“It’s done through its partnership with Wegmans and the sheriff’s office, to work with Covanta at its waste energy facility in Niagara Falls, where unused or unwanted expired pharmaceutical waste is converted to energy," Garland said.
Since the development of the event, the county has collected around 26,000 pounds of pharmaceutical waste.
