A local historical museum was heavily damaged by fire Tuesday night.

Officials say the Morgan-Manning House in Brockport caught fire in the basement around 7 p.m.

Firefighters say crews had trouble getting to the fire, which spread quickly, due to the age of the building.

There is no word on yet what caused the fire, but the museum suffered extensive damage, including the roof.

"We don't know what repairs have been done to it [or] how long ago it was," Brockport Fire Deputy Chief Tim Smith said. "We do know there was a fire in this building because it was historical. We know there was a fire in here a long time ago. We don't know how much of that was repaired fully or just covered up."

The Morgan-Manning House was built in 1854 and is part of the Western Monroe Historical Society.

In 1991, the property was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
