ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester City Councilmember Willie Lightfoot is expressing outrage over the recent violence in the city.

He was at his Jefferson Avenue barber shop Wednesday when gunshots rang out a block away. Police say a man in his 30s was killed.

Lightfoot, who less than 24 hours earlier had expressed concern over cuts to the RPD's budget, says he's had enough.

"This is ridiculous and it's got to stop,” he said. “We need to support the police officers, we need to step-up as a community, we need to … collectively come up with strategies and best practices of how we can eradicate and get rid of this violence in our community. It's going to take everybody."

The city budget, passed by the council Tuesday, cuts funding to the RPD by some $4.5 million.

Lightfoot is one of 16 Democrats on next week's primary ballot vying for five slots for city councilmember-at-large.
