The city of Rochester kicked off the HBCU Weekend of Hope on Thursday. Juniors and seniors were given the chance to talk with representatives of Historically Black Colleges and Universities during an event at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center.

"Central State University had the mission folks here, so we did encourage young folks to bring their transcripts," said Deputy Chief Keith Stith of the Rochester Police Department. "From what I understand, Central State University may be giving scholarships out on the spot.

"It would be an understatement if I go in and say how excited I am about this weekend," said Che' Hagins, coordinator for the city of Rochester's MBX Initiative. "I'm one of those people that was checking the weather because I'm excited about the big football game. More importantly, I'm excited about fellowship and being able to give back to these kids and show them what our college experiences are like."

Friday's events kick off with a private brunch and end with an alumni friends mixer at Innovative Field, which is open to the public. Red Wings game tickets are required.

All of this leads up to the Frederick Douglass HBCU Football Classic on Saturday at the Rochester Community Sports Complex. The Central State University Marauders will be taking on the Albany State Rams in the inaugural game. A battle of the bands will follow the game.

The weekend's events will close on Sunday with a community worship service.
