New York state has committed $4 million in additional funding to help transform Rochester's historic aqueduct into the centerpiece for the Roc the Riverway initiative.

Updated renderings were released last week on the concept. It calls for removing vehicle traffic from the Broad Street Bridge to turn it into a gathering place.

It will also establish pedestrian and bicycle waterfront connections along both sides of the river to help bridge gaps in the Genesee Riverway Trail.

“We are celebrating our history by letting it serve as our inspiration as we build for the future. As the centerpiece of our ROC the Riverway initiative, Aqueduct Reimagined will be a dramatic force for much-needed, positive change downtown,” said Mayor Malik Evans.

"The Genesee River and Erie Canal are at the spiritual and physical center of our downtown. This Aqueduct Reimagined project will create new gathering spaces, new pathways along the river, and will change the way people live, work and play downtown," said County Executive Adam Bello.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $175 million. It's expected to be completed by 2027.
