CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers players took a break from play books Tuesday to practice defensive driving skills.

  • Panthers rookie D.J. Moore was clocked speeding on I-77
  • BRAKES is a free defensive driving course for young drivers
  • Panthers players welcomed the lessons

BRAKES Founder Doug Herbert reached out to the Panthers after a speeding incident involving rookie player D.J. Moore. In August, troopers say they clocked Moore driving 113 mph in a 65 mph work zone on Interstate 77.

When Herbert heard the news, he jumped into action.

"We had all the rookies out here. We had a great time. I think we taught them quite a bit about being safe and defensive drivers," Herbert said.

BRAKES, is a free defensive driving course that teachers young drivers how to stay safe behind the wheel. Herbert is a former champion drag racer who created the nonprofit after he lost his two sons in a crash.

"If we can teach some skills to these young men and other teenagers around the country. I want fewer parents to get the phone call that I got, that their kids aren't coming home," he said.

Panthers players welcomed the lessons and reminders to make sure they leave the collisions for the field.
