1. Texas sues NCAA over participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Sunday announced he has sued the National Collegiate Athletic Association over the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
The lawsuit, according to a news release from Paxton’s office, accuses the NCAA of “engaging in false, deceptive, and misleading practices by marketing sporting events as ‘women’s’ competitions only,” in violation of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
2. A million taxpayers will soon receive up to $1,400 from the IRS. Who are they and why now?
Approximately 1 million taxpayers will automatically receive special payments of up to $1,400 from the IRS in the coming weeks. The money will be directly deposited into eligible people's bank accounts or sent in the mail by a paper check.
The IRS said it's distributing about $2.4 billion to taxpayers who failed to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns. People who missed one of the COVID stimulus payments or had received less than the full amount were able to claim the credit. But the IRS on Friday said it discovered many eligible taxpayers hadn't done so.
3. Fort Worth surpasses Austin to be Texas’ 4th-largest city
According to census data from 2023 and released in November, Fort Worth has surpassed Austin in population and now ranks as Texas’ fourth-largest city.
According to the Texas Demographic Center’s 2023 Population Estimates report, Austin now ranks as the No. 5 Texas metro.
4. Terminal E at George Bush Intercontinental Airport to be renamed after late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee
A resolution was voted on by the Houston City Council to rename George Bush Intercontinental Airport’s Terminal E for Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.
The 18th Congressional District, where the airport is located, was represented by Jackson Lee.
5. Beyoncé's performance highlighted Netflix's NFL debut on Christmas Day
Beyoncé proved more exciting than either game during Netflix’s NFL debut on Christmas Day.
Riding into her halftime appearance on a white horse, the 32-time Grammy winner rocked her hometown Houston crowd with a nearly 13-minute performance on Wednesday.
