As of July, there have been 26 heat-related deaths this year alone. Data from the Texas Department of State Health Services shows March is the only month where a heat-related death was not reported.

Summer 2024 has been cooler than the previous year. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention marked 2023 as the deadliest year for heat-related deaths. According to the CDC, heat-related deaths have increased in the last three years.

Organizations and counties throughout the state are working to ensure people stay safe during dangerous temperatures through programs offering free air conditioning, weatherization assistance and cooling centers. Spectrum News 1 has compiled a list of resources for Texans in need to beat the heat as temperatures are expected to reach triple digits.
