July is typically one of our drier and hotter months of the year. But, July 2021 will go down in the history books much differently.

What You Need To Know

  • We felt cooler temperatures across much of the state in July

  • We saw surplus rain in many Texas cities

  • Below-average temperatures could continue through August

Dallas

Below-average temperatures were the norm across North Texas in July. Only nine days featured high temperatures above normal, most of which fell during the final week of the month.

DFW Airport reached 100 degrees or higher just five times in July.

DFW airport picked up 1.50 inches of rain during the month. While many surrounding areas saw a surplus for July, DFW had slightly below-average precipitation.

Austin

Cool conditions also gripped the Capitol City for much of the month. Downtown Austin only had one triple-digit day for July.

According to the new 1990-2021 normals, there are on average ten 100-degree days during July. The last time Camp Mabry recorded just one 100-degree day in July was in July 1988.

On top of that, Austin picked up significant rain during July. While July is typically one of Austin’s driest months, Camp Mabry saw 4.05 inches of rain, nearly two inches more than what a typical July brings.

San Antonio

The Alamo City was also very cool in July. Added clouds and regular rain kept the temperatures down, and the city only saw one day with temperatures above average.

The San Antonio Airport picked up 4.38 inches for the month, running nearly a two-inch surplus.

Looking ahead

As we turn the calendar to a new month, August could also bring more of the same.

The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) forecasts cooler-than-normal conditions across much of the state.

While there will still be some sizzling hot days, the overall pattern leads to a below-normal temperature trend.

The CPC also expects wet weather to remain a problem across the eastern part of the state and far West Texas.
