ARLINGTON, Texas — The week that the Lone Star State has been awaiting has finally arrived: it's football state championships week.
Beginning Wednesday, Dec. 14 and through Saturday, Dec. 17, 24 teams will be competing to bring home that state title, but only 12 will succeed.
Here’s what to keep an eye out for:
Boerne will play China Spring on Friday at 3 p.m.
This is Boerne’s first title appearance in program history. The team is by no means your average high school size. The school’s offensive line average size is 6-foot-3, 270 pounds. The offense has scored 35 or more points in every game this season.
Coach Che Hendrix is in his fifth season at Boerne. His son, Houston, is a senior who’s committed to play at Air Force.
Unlike Boerne, China Spring is making its fifth title appearance. The school actually won the Class 4A, D2 title in 2021, and then was bumped up to 4A, D1 this season. If they win, China Spring would be just the sixth team to win consecutive titles after moving up a class.
Vandegrift, making program history, will be taking on DeSoto at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Vandegrift upset Westlake High School last week to advance to its program’s first-ever title appearance. Westlake has been the state champion for the last three years.
Vandegrift has had 14 straight wins after a season-opening loss against Dripping Springs. Coach Drew Sanders started the program in 2009 and is the only head coach in school history. Its defense has held teams to 24 points or less in 14 of 15 games this season.
DeSoto’s head coach coached the team from 2007-2014 before he took a hiatus to coach collegiate football. After DeSoto won the state championship in 2016, the coach came back in 2019 to try to bring the team back to state championships. The school went 13-2 this season. Their star WR is headed to Texas.
The last game of the week is a showcase for the long rivalry between Duncanville and Galena Park North Shore. Both schools, currently undefeated, have faced each other in the state championships before, yet North Shore always took home the victory. Duncanville defeated DeSoto in a huge 41-17 blowout earlier this season.
Championship week kicks off Wednesday with the first game between Benjamin and Lorraine at 11 a.m. All games will take place at AT&T Stadium.
