AMARILLO, Texas — One person is dead and nine are injured after a shooting at an Amarillo nightclub early Sunday morning.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. at the 700 block of S. Polk Street. Witnesses say a vehicle stopped at the entrance of the nightclub and the shooter got out and fired into a large crowd with a rifle before getting back in the vehicle and driving away.

Randall County Sheriff’s deputies found and stopped the vehicle near Hillside and Bell Street after receiving information from an witness.

The shooter was identified as 23-year-old Robert Kenney Knox, and the driver was identified as 21-year-old Nahryah Hilesta Ines Hayes, also of Amarillo. Another passenger in the back seat was identified as 22-year-old Britt Brinson Cave.

Knox and Hayes were both booked into the Potter County Detention Center and charged with murder and eight counts of deadly conduct/discharge of a firearm. Cave was charged with public intoxication and booked into the Randall County Detention Center.

The Amarillo Police Department identified the deceased as 25-year-old John Love Louima, who died at the hospital from multiple gunshot injuries. Nine other people were injured and transported to local hospitals. They are “in various stages of medical treatment,” police say.

Police say evidence indicates the shooting was a result of an earlier altercation at the bar.

“Detectives have a considerable amount of investigation to complete before we are able to understand completely what happened,” the statement read.
