  • The ultimate jackpot was won by a ticket purchased in California and is estimated to have a $549.7 million cash payout

The Texas ticket was purchased at a 7-Eleven in Arlington, and the winner chose to remain anonymous, according to a news release from Mega Millions. The ticket matched all five of the white ball numbers drawn on Dec. 27 but not the Mega Ball number.

The Mega Ball number on their ticket was 5, while the actual pick was Mega Ball number 6.

If the Mega Ball number on the ticket was just one number higher, they would have split the billion-dollar jackpot.

The ultimate jackpot was won by a ticket purchased in California and is estimated to have a $549.7 million cash payout. It was the fifth-largest jackpot won in Mega Millions’ history and the seventh time the jackpot had been over $1 billion.

Currently, tickets for the Mega Millions lottery cost $2 a piece, but beginning in April, the price will increase to $5 per ticket. The lottery claims the higher price point will improve the odds to win the jackpot and make the jackpots grow faster and bigger.
