SHERMAN, Texas — Search and rescue crews on Thursday resumed the search for an 8-year-old girl after a car hydroplaned off U.S. 75 and into Post Oak Creek in Sherman, Texas, on Tuesday.

The Sherman Police Department reported that about 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the vehicle left the roadway, became trapped in a drainage ditch and traveled down the creek.

First responders reached the vehicle and rescued four of the six passengers. A body was recovered several hours later. All the recovered passengers are expected to survive. The little girl wasn’t located.

Crews resumed search efforts Thursday morning but said their efforts may be hampered by rainy weather.

“Searchers have covered approximately 7 miles of creek today but regrettably have not located the missing girl,” the Sherman Police Department said in a Facebook post. “We are shifting our focus into the county, targeting some possible locations where we have not looked to as yet. Our search will continue until dark today, then we will resume searching again before daylight.”

On Thursday, police identified the 8-year-old girl as Clara Robinson. Her father, Will Robinson, was identified as the decedent. 

Police and firefighters said that although they appreciate the public’s concern and willingness to help, dozens of search teams are already deployed and they do not need more people or equipment.
