AUSTIN, Texas — Lighted plastic figures known as blow molds were popular at Christmastime in the 1950s and 1960s. Austin resident Jordan Maywald collects all kinds of blow molds. They’re the centerpiece of his front yard holiday display. Thousands of people turn out every year to get a glimpse.
“For a lot of people, it’s their favorite part because these are like old-school decorations that you used to see all the time. It takes you back in time to an old-fashioned Christmas,” said Maywald.
He wasn’t always a fan of blow molds. Maywald had a few when he was a child. Some were also donated to him. Now he owns a lawn full of plastic Santas, snowmen and Disney characters.
“So now we just have a few hundred of them in our yard at Christmas time!” he said.
Maywald says his annual display of blow molds and Christmas lights are also a way of giving back. Visitors donate to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
“We’re in our 10th year actually and we’ve raised over $320,000 over the past nine years. We’ve granted over 40 wishes for children who are ill to go on vacation or a room makeover. It’s just a really cool experience,” said Maywald.
The Maywald Christmas Light Display runs through Dec. 28.
