GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — More Texans will soon be able to get their Chicago dog fix without hopping on a flight with the continued expansion of a beloved Illinois chain.

Portillo’s will open its latest Texas location in Schertz, 22 miles east of San Antonio, according to a report from MySA. It would be the only Portillo’s location in the state located outside of the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston areas, which have all opened in the last year.

The San Antonio-area location is set to open in the summer of 2025, no later than June, Schertz Mayor Ralph Gutierrez told MySA.

The chain serves up classics like Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches and the iconic chocolate cake shake.

Texas got its first taste of Portillo’s when it debuted in The Colony in January 2023. Since then, the chain has added to its growing list of locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston areas, including in Fort Worth, Mansfield, Arlington, Grapevine, Denton, Allen and Richmond.

Other Portillo's locations coming to Texas include Grand Prairie, Tomball, Katy, Willowbrook and Stafford. The Schertz location is not yet listed on the Portillo’s store locator.

Portillo’s started as a humble Illinois hot dog stand in 1963 and has since become a national chain, expanding into Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, California, Arizona, Florida and Texas.

There has been chatter that the chain will soon expand into New Braunfels, but Portillo’s has not released an official statement.
