AUSTIN, Texas — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued a massive recall of over 11 million pounds of meat and poultry products because of a possible listeria contamination, with many Texas stores affected.

What You Need To Know

  • The products that are subject to the recall came from a BrucePac Durant, Oklahoma, plant and have the establishment numbers “51205 or P-51205” inside or under the USDA mark of inspection label

  • Stores that carried the impacted items include H-E-B, Walmart, Trader Joe’s, Aldi and many other grocery chains across the country

  • The contamination was first discovered during a routine product testing by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, which confirmed that a product containing “RTE poultry products produced by BrucePac” tested positive for listeria

  • The USDA first issued a recall last week of all BrucePac ready-to-eat meat and poultry products made between May 31 and Oct. 8. Originally, the department said close to 10 million pounds of product were being recalled, but the USDA on Tuesday upped the weight to 11,765,285 pounds

Further investigation found that BrucePac RTE chicken was the source of the listeria.

The department also said in Tuesday’s recall update that some products were distributed to schools, but it did not have a distribution list. When that list is available, it will be posted on the USDA website

The Tuesday update from the USDA also included a 343-page list of labels and products that were part of the recall. Some products on that list included eight H-E-B brand salad bowls.

Despite the large recall, no one has reported getting ill because of the recalled products.

This isn’t the first recall to happen because of a listeria outbreak this year.

A Boar’s Head deli meat plant shuttered due to the bacteria, with people reporting illnesses between late May and late August. At least 10 people have died because of that outbreak and 59 people across 19 states have been sickened, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The USDA has launched an investigation into how it handled the reports of problems at the Boar’s Head plant, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said on Tuesday.
